The Elks are set to celebrate their 75th anniversary this year. Exciting times. In fact, they are bringing former team greats to recognize the colossal achievements of the franchise this weekend as the Elks open things up against the Riders. However, things took a turn last night.
You see, last night the Edmonton Oilers sealed the deal and advanced to the Stanley Cup final. I know what you’re thinking. Why does that matter Chad? Well, the Oilers effectively steal the Elks thunder as the Oilers play game 1 of the Stanley Cup final in Florida this upcoming Saturday at 6pm. The Elks are set to kickoff the season this Saturday at Commonwealth at 5pm. Thunder stolen.
Luckily, there will be a few hard core Rider fans in the stands I’m sure. And yes, there will still be the occasional Elks fan that prioritizes football over the Oilers. However, my guess is tickets will be hitting the secondary market at record low prices this week.
It takes SO MUCH work to organize a season opener. The Elks team has been hard at work convincing fans to come back after essentially resigning the team from the league with such atrocious records that even the Riders of the 90’s would be embarrassed. A total team re-brand is complicated. Let alone re-branding in a market where you are beyond second fiddle in comparison to the juggernaut Oilers.
I’m not sure about logistics and I’m just spit balling here, but it would be in the best interest of the Elks to try and do a 1pm start Saturday. Again, easier said than done. But if you want to maintain a shred of attention, the mad scramble may be worth it. Also, as a Rider fan, I want to watch both games! If you won’t do it for the franchise…do it for me! -Chad
